The Nokota Preserve is proud to bring you Moving Hearts: Leading through The Sacred Wisdom of the Horse called Nokota—now in print! Moving Hearts is a thoughtful study of the Nokota herd as a model for successful leadership techniques that we can apply to our families, community and businesses.
This project has been a true labor of love for us, eight years in the making! We would like to thank authors Dr. Darlyne Bailey, Christine Boatwright, Rose Ryan and Will Strongheart for sharing their experiences and insights with us and bringing this book to life. We hope you will embrace the book and the wisdom imparted to us from the Nokota herd.
Moving Hearts: Leading Through the Sacred Wisdom of a Horse Called Nokota is not a leadership book in the conventional sense. It does not begin with metrics, hierarchies, or power. It begins in the pasture—with a nearly forgotten horse whose way of being offers a radical, restorative vision for how humans might lead, live, and belong again.
Rooted in the ancient lineage of the Nokota horses of the Northern Plains and their deep relationship with the Lakota people, Moving Hearts invites readers into a leadership model shaped not by dominance, but by trust, emotional intelligence, and communal survival. Through history, lived experience, Indigenous wisdom, and emerging science, the authors reveal how the Nokota herd operates as one of nature’s most resilient and emotionally coherent social systems—and what that system can teach modern leaders who feel burned out, disconnected, or trapped in brittle organizational cultures.
Drawing on equine-assisted learning, HeartMath research, and firsthand work with Nokota horses, the book shows how leadership is distributed rather than imposed, how roles emerge organically, and how safety, comfort, and play are not luxuries but prerequisites for sustained success.
The Nokota do not lead through force; they lead through presence. They demand authenticity, punish ego, and reward coherence—lessons that translate powerfully to classrooms, nonprofits, businesses, communities, and families.
Written by a multidisciplinary team of educators, advocates, researchers, and indigenous voices, Moving Hearts weaves narrative, science, and spirit into a compelling call to action: to remember our “wild” wisdom, to rebuild communities that honor individual gifts, and to lead in ways that strengthen the whole rather than elevate the few.
This is a book for leaders who sense that something essential has been lost—and who are ready to learn, humbly and courageously, from an ancient teacher with four hooves and an open heart. For readers of leadership, organizational development, mindfulness, indigenous studies, and those seeking a more humane, sustainable way forward.
